a better way.  Sort the plugin priorities and do them in descending order.
Also makes use of arts/esd functions to test if they are holding the
device or not.  If present, we check the those plugins first and only
use them if they are currently holding the device.

It still requires dlcompat, but now plugins have their own LDFLAGS variable
which is platform dependent.  Also disabled aRts by default on OS X because
it just hangs mysteriously.  macosx native plugin builds and installs but
libao can't seem to load it.  Not sure why yet.  ESD output works with
fink, however.

suggests this is more or less optimal.  Added new option to allow the
number of periods to be adjusted without needing to recompile.  Also fixed
an incorrect sound writing loop as per Jack's suggestion.
